Speaking of paragons, I doubt it would be so, but could there have been some foreshadowing mentioning of Varric's house in DA:O?
And would there ever be a steady and large population of surface dwarves outside of Ferelden and far from Orzammar?
Mary: There are surface dwarf populations in most major cities. Orzammar trades with most nations in Thedas, and everywhere that Orzammar sends goods, you find a population of the "surface caste" conducting business between the humans and the dwarves. Ferelden has a disproportionate number of them for the size and wealth of the country because it's sitting on top of the entrance to Orzammar. You'll actually find a lot more surface dwarves in Val Royeaux, Minrathous, Nevarra, Antiva City, Kirkwall, and Dairsmuid.
But should a surface dwarf return to Orzammar, would (s)he be better off (or the same) than the Casteless in Dust Town or would they just deny them entry? And how would a higher-ranked surfacer be treated amongst the dwarves of Orzammar?
Related note: Bhelen as King allows Casteless to fight in the Deep Roads for their people, does this also apply for Surfacers?
Mary: 1. A surface dwarf who returns to Orzammar is better off than a casteless from Dust Town, if only because the surfacer probably has money and the business connections to keep making money, and the duster doesn't.
B. When there's any kind of trouble in Orzammar, they do just shut the gates and deny even the surface dwarves entry.
iii. The social ranks of the surfacers aren't worth a bronto's behind to their Orzammar counterparts, however, again, rank generally means connections. If you played the dwarf noble origin, (or remember some of the other Orzammar quests involving the nobles) a lot of Noble caste houses have family -- cousins, nieces, nephews, distant relatives, but still in their House -- who go to the surface to conduct trade. It's a large part of where the nobles get their wealth, even if they don't like to acknowledge it.
d) Bhelen might let the surfacers fight for Orzammar, but most of them don't want to anyway. Varric, for instance, was born topside, has never set foot in Orzammar, and considers himself a citizen of Kirkwall. He'd be much more inclined to fight for Kirkwall, or the Free Marches, than for the dwarven kingdom.
So how do things work among the shadier elements of surface Dwarf society? Men of Honor? Or typical Thieves Guild?
Mary: Which shadier elements? If you asked Varric, (and depending somewhat on the day of the week) he would probably tell you that the Dwarven Merchants Guild was every bit as cutthroat and criminal (if not moreso) as any thieves' guild in Kirkwall. But he might be slightly biased.
I can't... tell if this is a tease or not
Mary: No, that was serious. Okay, well, mostly serious. Varric is in the Dwarven Merchants Guild, but they are the bane of his existence. They're much like the Assembly in Orzammar, only they don't weild political power. Not directly, at least. Varric hates sitting through meetings. No, that was serious. Okay, well, mostly serious. So does he run a shop (with a back room full of shady things) or smuggle transport goods or something or is that a spoiler? I hope he has minions. He seems like a guy who should have minions.
Mary: Varric has... well, he wouldn't call them minions. He'd say "contacts." or "People." He's the younger son in the Tethras family: His older brother is the head of the family and runs what could be called a small financial empire. They don't have a shop. They invest in shops. Officially, Varric is an idle younger brother in a wealthy household who spends most of his time hanging out in taverns telling wild stories while other people buy him drinks. Unofficially, he maintains a spy network with contacts throughout all levels of the city so he can quietly deal with the assassination attemps, scandals, and campaigns of industrial espionage that come along with being a family in the Dwarven Merchants Guild.

XD
